Enabling Global-Scale Mine-Level Indicators from Satellite Observations

MINE-THE-GAP is an ERC Consolidator Grant project aimed at scaling monitoring environmental impacts of the mining sector globally. The surge in mining has uncovered a critical gap in our understanding of its environmental and social impacts. Essential indicators, such as precise geographical locations, waste generation, and details of extracted minerals, are surprisingly scant worldwide. MINE-THE-GAP will unlock new avenues in sustainability research, overcoming obstacles caused by the lack of essential geoinformation. It will create the basis for monitoring mining sites globally, which is essential for transparency and for providing mine-level environmental metrics to support decision making.
